Review: Relais La Corte dei Papi, Tuscany

On our first family holiday abroad with our three-month-old son Xavier, we chose to stay at the Relais La Corte dei Papi in Tuscany, a decision that exceeded our expectations in every way. Nestled in the serene countryside just outside of Cortona, this hotel offered the perfect blend of luxurious comfort, historic charm, and impeccable service.

The local area around Relais La Corte dei Papi is nothing short of enchanting. Situated in La Dogana, it provides a tranquil base for exploring the picturesque towns and rolling hills of Tuscany. Cortona, a mere 10-minute drive away, is a delightful destination with its medieval architecture, charming streets, and panoramic views of the Val di Chiana. During our stay, we took leisurely drives to nearby vineyards and olive groves, reveling in the beauty and tranquility of the Tuscan landscape.

The hotel itself is a beautifully restored 18th-century property, maintaining its historical character while offering modern amenities. Our suite was a highlight of our stay. The luxurious spa suite featured a massive jacuzzi bath, a steam room with aromatherapy, and ambient lighting and music that created a soothing retreat after a day of sightseeing. The attention to detail in the suite was remarkable, from the exposed wooden beams and terracotta floors to the stone arches that gave it a distinct rustic charm.

Every morning, we were treated to a sumptuous breakfast served in the serene garden or in the cozy dining area. The breakfast spread included a variety of fresh fruits, pastries, cheeses, and local specialties. We particularly enjoyed the freshly baked bread and the aromatic Italian coffee, which provided a delightful start to our day. The staff were incredibly accommodating, ensuring that even with a baby, we had everything we needed to enjoy our meals comfortably.

The pool area at Relais La Corte dei Papi is an oasis of relaxation. Surrounded by lush gardens and offering stunning views of the Tuscan hills, it was the perfect spot to unwind. The pool itself was pristine, and there were plenty of comfortable loungers and shaded areas where we could relax while Xavier napped peacefully beside us.

One of the most memorable aspects of our stay was the dining experience at the hotel’s restaurant. On one evening we enjoyed an exquisite dinner featuring traditional Tuscan cuisine with a modern twist. The dishes were crafted with fresh, local ingredients and paired beautifully with the hotel’s own wines. From the delicate handmade pastas to the rich, flavourful meats, each dish was a culinary delight. I was particularly enamoured with the succulent monkfish and the rosemary infused slow cooked beef short rib. The staff, including the gracious owner David Papi, made us feel like treasured guests, attending to our needs with warmth and professionalism.

Throughout our stay, the service was exceptional. David and his team went above and beyond to ensure our comfort and satisfaction. We were surprised to learn one day that David was the owner of the hotel as we had seen him working so hard alongside the rest of the staff in such a humble manner. His attentiveness and dedication to making our stay perfect was gloriously evident.

Our stay at Relais La Corte dei Papi was an unforgettable experience. The combination of luxurious accommodations, exceptional service, and the enchanting Tuscan setting made it the perfect choice for our first family holiday abroad. We left with cherished memories and a deep appreciation for the beauty and hospitality of Tuscany, eagerly looking forward to our next visit.

For anyone seeking an unapologetically glamorous and serene getaway in the heart of Tuscany, Relais La Corte dei Papi is an excellent choice. It offers not only a place to stay but a complete experience of relaxation, fine dining, and authentic Tuscan charm.
