Sam Harrison celebrates 20 years of restaurants with a series of supper clubs and we loved the one with HG Walter

There are evenings in London’s dining calendar that feel truly special—those rare occasions when food, wine, and conviviality come together in a way that lingers long after the final glass is poured. Such was the case at Sam’s Riverside during one of the 20th-anniversary supper clubs, co-hosted by legendary butchers HG Walter.

I was fortunate enough to attend the evening, and from the very first bite, it was clear why Sam Harrison has chosen to celebrate his milestone career with the suppliers who have been his partners and friends for so many years. The menu was nothing short of sublime. We began with a delicate chicken terrine, rich yet refined, followed by a steak tartare that showcased HG Walter’s mastery of meat in its purest form—silky, deeply flavoured, and perfectly seasoned. Later courses included tender lamb chops, cooked to blushing perfection, and a sumptuous sirloin steak that had the table falling silent in collective appreciation. To finish, a refreshing lemon tart cut through the richness, its citrus brightness bringing the evening to a graceful close.

But the food was only part of the story. The presence of HG Walter elevated the evening into something even more memorable. Founded in 1972, this family-run butchers has become synonymous with quality, sourcing from the very best British farms and working closely with producers who share their values of sustainability and animal welfare. Their meat isn’t just delicious—it’s the product of generations of skill, knowledge, and respect for the craft. As the HG Walter team shared stories of their process, from hand-selecting cuts to building relationships with farmers, it was clear why their reputation has reached near-mythical status among London’s chefs and gourmands alike.

It’s this collaborative spirit—between restaurant and supplier, craft and creativity—that defines Sam’s supper club series. Each event this September offers guests a chance not just to dine but to connect: to hear from the people behind the produce and the wines, to understand the provenance of each dish, and to raise a glass in celebration of the community Sam Harrison has nurtured over two decades.

For those who, like me, relish evenings where flavour, craftsmanship, and storytelling converge, they are not to be missed.

This September, Sam’s isn’t just celebrating 20 years—it’s celebrating the people and partnerships that make dining in London extraordinary. And if my night with HG Walter is anything to go by, guests are in for an unforgettable treat.
