Tucked discreetly in the bustling streets of Mayfair, El Pirata offers a sophisticated, contemporary twist on traditional Spanish cuisine and has been in business for an impressive 31 years. On a recent evening, I visited with a group of four food-loving chums, eager to explore a menu that promised both authenticity and culinary flair. From the moment we entered, it was clear that El Pirata was special — a harmonious blend of vibrant flavours, stylish design, and impeccable service.
The interior exudes understated elegance. Exposed brickwork and rustic wooden beams meet sleek lighting and polished tableware, creating a space that feels simultaneously relaxed and refined. It is intimate enough for conversation yet lively enough to feel festive, setting the perfect stage for a night of indulgence.
Our culinary journey began with prawns in garlic and chilli sauce, a dish that immediately captured attention with its aromatic presence. The prawns were tender and perfectly cooked, infused with the fragrant warmth of garlic and a subtle kick of chilli that lingered delightfully on the palate. This was followed by Patatas Bravas, the quintessential Spanish tapas: golden, crisp potatoes enveloped in a rich, slightly smoky chilli and tomato sauce, offering the perfect balance of heat and acidity.
Next, we moved on to Alcachofas a la plancha, grilled artichokes drizzled with silky alioli. The artichokes were tender, with a delicate char that enhanced their natural sweetness, while the alioli added a creamy, garlicky richness. Each dish was thoughtfully presented, reflecting the kitchen’s meticulous attention to detail.
For our main courses, the table became a feast of textures and flavours. The Pollo al Ajillo, a pan-fried chicken dish with white wine, garlic, chilli, and olive oil, was perfectly tender and bursting with aromatic intensity. The ribeye steak, served with peppery roquette and nutty Manchego cheese, was grilled to perfection — juicy, succulent, and generously seasoned. Equally memorable were the grilled lamb kebabs, marinated in a delicate yogurt sauce that kept the meat tender while imparting subtle tangy notes.
To complement the mains, we sampled a selection of Spanish cheeses, elegantly presented with quince jelly and picos. Each cheese had a distinct personality, from creamy and mild to bold and aged, while the sweet quince jelly added a playful, sophisticated contrast. This cheese course felt indulgent yet perfectly balanced, a testament to the restaurant’s ability to combine tradition with thoughtful innovation.
The finale of our meal was pure decadence: churros with hot chocolate sauce. Crisply golden on the outside, soft and fluffy within, the churros were the perfect vessel for the velvety, rich chocolate. It was a playful, indulgent end to a meal defined by elegance and flavour.
Service at El Pirata was exemplary. Our server navigated the menu with expertise, providing insights into each dish and offering perfectly timed recommendations. Their warmth and attentiveness ensured a relaxed, immersive dining experience without ever feeling intrusive.
What sets El Pirata apart is its seamless balance between tradition and modernity. Each dish pays homage to the classic flavours of Spain, while thoughtful touches — whether in presentation, seasoning, or pairing — elevate the experience to a contemporary, luxury level. The menu encourages sharing, fostering conviviality and laughter around the table, yet each plate has been crafted with precision and care.
El Pirata is more than an alluring Spanish eatery; it is a celebration of Spanish cuisine and conviviality in one of London’s most elegant districts. From the aromatic garlic prawns to the indulgent churros, every dish delights the senses. For those seeking a luxurious yet authentic Spanish dining experience in Mayfair, this hidden gem delivers on every level, leaving guests already anticipating their next visit.
