Review: Kestrel Cottage, Bourton‑on‑the‑Water

A weekend at Kestrel Cottage in Bourton‑on‑the‑Water offers the kind of restorative escape that blends Cotswold charm with family‑friendly ease, a minibreak that feels both indulgent and grounding. When my wife and our toddler Xavier, and I escaped the hubbub of London recently, we were looking for somewhere wholesome, scenic, and walkable. What we found was a stay that captured everything we love about the English countryside, wrapped in the gentle magic of a village affectionately known as the Venice of the Cotswolds for its low stone bridges and the River Windrush threading gracefully through its centre.

Set within a former water‑mill, Kestrel Cottage carries its history with quiet elegance. The Cotswold stone walls, warm and textured, give the apartment an unmistakable sense of place. Inside, the open‑plan living, dining, and kitchen area is bright, spacious, and thoughtfully arranged, ideal for families who want the freedom of self‑catering without compromising on style. The kitchen is fully equipped, but we found ourselves happily abandoning breakfast prep in favour of grabbing pastries from the rustic (always busy!) bakery just outside the cottage. Warm croissants and fresh sourdough loaves became our morning ritual as we watched the village slowly come alive. The river views from our bedroom and living room windows were truly magical and we loved how the meditative sound of the babbling water helped lull us to sleep each night.

The double bedroom was cosy and calm, and the apartment also includes a sofa bed, making it easy to accommodate a small family or an extra cottage-loving friend. Towels and bedding were provided, and the bathroom, with its shower‑over‑bath setup, was perfect for washing off Xavier after a day of adventurous riverside exploring.

Bourton‑on‑the‑Water is one of those rare places that feels almost too scenic to be real. Staying at Kestrel Cottage means you’re steps away from its prettiest corners. We couldn’t believe how centrally located it was and how everything of interest was within walking distance. As we wandered along the riverbanks, watching a rare glimmer of sunlight ripple across the water, and crossed the iconic low bridges we felt truly blessed to be there and vowed to return in the warmer months.

Every turn on our daily walks revealed another postcard‑worthy view, from stone cottages to willow trees dipping into the river. The bakery outside our cottage became a daily stop, its warm pastries and rustic bakes adding to the charm of simply strolling through the village. Even the most ordinary walk felt like taking part in one of those heartwarming American romcoms that idolise English country villages.

For Xavier, the highlight was the Cotswold Motoring and Toy Museum, conveniently located just behind the cottage’s allocated parking space. Every walk past it sparked excitement. Inside, the museum is a nostalgic delight, filled with vintage cars, retro toys, and colourful displays that captivated all of us.

Bourton‑on‑the‑Water may be quaint, but its dining scene is quietly impressive. One of our standout meals was at The Mousetrap, a beloved local pub that balances comfort with culinary flair. The roasted duck, served with crisp duck‑fat potatoes, was rich, golden, and beautifully flavoursome. My wife’s braised beef shin arrived with a towering Yorkshire pudding and silky garlic confit mash, a plate that felt like elevated comfort food at its finest. What made the evening truly memorable was the hospitality. The manager was exceptionally kind and accommodating, making space for us, engaging warmly with Xavier, and ensuring our meal felt relaxed rather than rushed. It’s the sort of service that lingers long after the last bite

Kestrel Cottage made our much needed family minibreak feel effortless. The wholesome home-away from home environment, free WiFi, and optional cot and high‑chair hire make it especially suited to young families, while the quaint local shops, restaurants and tearooms added a sense of glorious Cotswolds charm. Bourton‑on‑the‑Water itself adds the final layer of rustic wonderment. The epitome of slow living, days unfold gently here, life feels softer and restful evenings at the cottage feel like a soft exhale.

I can’t think of anywhere more restful, yet reviving for Londoners in search of soul-soothing escapism and iconic Cotswolds elegance.
