Covent Garden, with its lively street performances, world-class shopping, and vibrant cultural offerings, has long been a magnet for locals and tourists alike. But nestled within this iconic district is a hidden gem that offers a tranquil retreat from the bustling crowds—The Yards. Tucked away between cobbled streets and elegant courtyards, The Yards is an urban oasis that seamlessly combines modern dining, fashion, and lifestyle experiences in a picturesque setting. Within this charming enclave, I found myself indulging in two exquisite dining experiences at Gura Gura and Ukiyo, both of which left a lasting impression.
A Stroll Through The Yards
The Yards is a series of interconnecting courtyards and streets, including St Martin’s Courtyard and Mercer Walk. It’s just a two-minute walk from the Covent Garden and Leicester Square tube stations, making it a convenient escape for those seeking a slice of tranquility in the heart of London’s West End. As you wander through The Yards, you’ll encounter an eclectic mix of renowned restaurants, lifestyle boutiques, and fashion-forward stores, including Barbour, Lululemon, Allbirds, and The White Company, among many others. The area exudes a relaxed, yet sophisticated vibe, with outdoor seating, leafy greenery, and charming walkways that invite visitors to explore at a leisurely pace.
But while the shopping options are undeniably appealing, my main focus on this visit was food. And The Yards doesn’t disappoint. It’s home to some of London’s best-loved eateries, offering everything from modern European fare to Asian fusion delicacies. On two particular evenings, I dined at two standout restaurants: Gura Gura and Ukiyo.
A Contemporary Asian Feast at Gura Gura
This contemporary Asian restaurant promises an innovative dining experience in a relaxed holiday-esque setting. As soon as I walked through the door, I was struck by the sleek, modern interiors that blend minimalistic design with warm lighting and earthy tones. The ambiance was immediately inviting—chic yet comfortable, perfect for an intimate dinner or a relaxed gathering with friends.
Gura Gura is known for its array of small plates, dim sum, and sushi, offering a diverse menu that showcases a mix of Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian flavours. I started my meal with a delightful truffle laden avocado carpaccio and a very addictive soy infused cucumber salad.
Next came the sushi, and it did not disappoint. The tuna sashimi was a particular highlight, with its melt-in-your-mouth texture and fresh, vibrant flavor. The rolls, too, were a delight—creative combinations of fresh fish, avocado, and crispy tempura that delivered on both taste and presentation. The dragon roll, in particular, stood out with its beautifully arranged slices of eel and avocado, topped with a drizzle of sweet soy glaze.
I next devoured the miso-marinated black cod, a dish that Guru Guru has become known for. The fish was beautifully cooked, with a caramelized glaze that added a hint of sweetness to the savory miso. The cod itself was flaky and moist, practically melting in my mouth with each bite. Paired with a side of fluffy coconut rice, it was a satisfying and well-balanced dish that showcased the restaurant’s commitment to quality and flavour.
Ukiyo: A Taste of Modern Tokyo in Covent Garden
For the second part of my dining adventure, I ventured to Ukiyo, a modern Japanese hand roll bar that brings the chic spirit of Tokyo to Covent Garden. The moment I stepped inside, I was transported to a world where contemporary design meets traditional Japanese aesthetics. Ukiyo’s interiors are sleek and stylish, with a minimalist approach that emphasizes clean lines, soft lighting, and subtle pops of color. The atmosphere here relaxed and friendly with its focal point being the seating area facing the talented chefs at work.
The menu at Ukiyo focuses on modern Japanese cuisine, with a particular emphasis on fresh ingredients and creative presentations. My wife and I sampled the glorious tasting menu, and every dish that was expertly made in front of us was a true culinary masterpiece. We devoured cut rolls of king crab, salmon avocado and spicy tuna to name a few and a delightful selection of fresh nigiri. The sashimi were also outstanding in terms of flavour, simplicity and freshness.
I can honestly say that I had some of the best sushi I had tried in a long time on that enchanting night in Ukiyo.
The Yards: A Culinary Destination
As I left The Yards that evening, I couldn’t help but reflect on what a special place this precinct has become. Both Gura Gura and Ukiyo offered distinct dining experiences that showcased the best of modern Asian cuisine, while the overall atmosphere of The Yards provided a tranquil yet vibrant setting that felt worlds away from the hustle and bustle of nearby Covent Garden.
With its eclectic mix of restaurants, boutiques, and lifestyle offerings, The Yards is truly a hidden gem in the heart of London’s West End. Whether you’re looking for a stylish spot for dinner, a place to shop for unique fashion finds, or simply a quiet corner to relax, The Yards has something for everyone. And after my evenings of culinary indulgence, I know I’ll be returning soon to explore even more of what this charming enclave has to offer.
