As the 2025 Cannes film festival comes closer to a fabulous end, I can’t help but remember a fond memory. One balmy evening, many moons ago, I was sitting at the iconic Carlton Hotel’s terrace after a long night of glamorous merriment. I was there with my brother and childhood friend for the film festival and we had spent an action-packed evening at the Magnum party where Cara Delavigne was being delightfully entertained by a group of breakdancers in drag. Amidst all the film people, models and fabulously shameless social climbers I noticed movie heartthrob Ryan Gosling sitting with David Tenant, enjoying a post party coffee. Feeling slightly daring after a couple of tequila shots, I considered popping over to say hello and ask for a photo but was stopped by my brother who told me it could end in great embarrassment.
I watched as all eyes watched Ryan, no one making a move, everyone acting like they hobnobbed with insanely attractive movie stars on a daily basis. Suddenly, a woman walked over to him (all eyes following her brave strut). She smiled at a friendly looking but weary Ryan and appeared to ask for a photo, phone in hand. Sadly Ryan shook his head and refused her request, which resulted in the brave fan mincing mournfully back to her seat, mission not accomplished – and me feeling great relief for not taking the risk.
I planned never to approach handsome celebrities again, yet I yearned to return to The Carlton and stay in one of the plush suites overlooking the yacht-strewn, Mediterranean sea.
For years, the iconic Carlton Cannes has been thought of as one of the most glamorous hotels in the world, synonymous with Riviera glamour and cinematic history. As someone who has often admired its grandeur from afar (aka The People Watching Terrace), I had long dreamed of experiencing its legendary hospitality firsthand. That dream became a reality when my wife, Samira, our eight-month-old son Xavier, and I spent three unforgettable nights at this Belle Époque masterpiece. From the breathtaking sea view suite to indulgent dining experiences and blissful relaxation at the Carlton Beach Club, our expectations were not only met—they were exceeded in every possible way.
Stepping into our Sea View Balcony Suite, we were immediately captivated by the panoramic view from our delightful balcony: the azure waters of the Mediterranean, dotted with luxurious yachts, stretching as far as the eye could see. The suite itself was a perfect blend of classic French sophistication and contemporary comfort, with plush furnishings, designer coffee table books, and soft lighting creating an atmosphere of refined indulgence. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the glorious Riviera skyline, inviting the golden light to flood in each morning. Xavier, ever curious, was mesmerised by the sight of sailboats drifting lazily across the bay, while we savoured the sheer elegance of our surroundings.
Each morning began with a visit to the Carlton’s legendary breakfast buffet. Set in a stunning dining room exuding old-world charm, the buffet was nothing short of spectacular. From freshly baked pastries and cakes that rivalled the best patisseries in Paris to an array of artisan cheeses, charcuterie, and delicate smoked salmon – every detail was crafted to perfection. The made-to-order omelette station, offering an array of gourmet fillings, became a personal favourite, while Xavier enjoyed fresh fruit and exciting premium yogurts encased in frosted glass jars. The highlight, however, was the Champagne and caviar bar, an indulgence that set the tone for the day. Sipping on crisp Brut Rosé while overlooking the sunlit Croisette was nothing short of magical.
For lunch, we dined at the hotel’s Riviera Restaurant, where chef-crafted dishes celebrated the vibrant flavours of the Mediterranean coast. Seated on the sun-drenched terrace, we enjoyed smoked salmon with mascarpone and lime, as well as the beef carpaccio with parmesan and fried onions to start. For the main course, we indulged in lamb from Haute-Provence, served with honey, mouttabal eggplant, and spiced carrots, alongside the Entrecôte de bœuf, accompanied by traditional Béarnaise sauce and assorted vegetables. As I avoid refined sugar whenever possible, the chef kindly created a bespoke strawberries and cream dessert, ensuring that the meal ended on a perfectly sweet yet natural note. The sommelier’s recommendation of a chilled Provence rosé beautifully complemented the meal, elevating the overall experience. The service was impeccable—attentive without being intrusive—ensuring that Xavier, too, was made to feel like a valued guest.
No stay at the Carlton would be complete without time at the Carlton Beach Club, a private sanctuary of white parasols, pristine sands, and turquoise waters. We settled into sumptuous sun loungers, letting the gentle sea breeze lull us into relaxation. We took turns dipping into the cool Mediterranean waters, enjoying the refreshing embrace of the sea. For lunch, the beachside menu offered light, delectable fare, including a truffle-laden lobster roll and a beautifully presented Niçoise salad. With impeccable service ensuring our glasses were never empty, the afternoon felt like an endless dream of Riviera indulgence.
Back at the hotel, we made the most of the Carlton’s elegant outdoor swimming pool, a haven of tranquillity away from the bustling Croisette. The heated waters provided the perfect setting for a leisurely swim, while the surrounding sun loungers and shaded cabanas offered a stylish retreat to unwind with a refreshing cocktail in hand. Xavier delighted in the gentle ripples of the water, making it a truly enjoyable experience for the whole family.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, we experienced a different kind of magic at Ruya, the Carlton’s celebrated Turkish restaurant. The ambience was sultry and inviting, with intricate lanterns casting a golden glow over plush banquettes. The menu paid homage to Anatolian cuisine, reimagined with a modern twist. We started with goat’s cheese curd with pistachio and grilled sourdough bread, as well as the 24-hour slow-cooked Wagyu beef brisket with Turkish BBQ glaze, chickpea purée, and housemade harissa. For our main course, we indulged in grilled lamb cutlets with smoked aubergine, tomato, minted yoghurt, and garlic chips. Each dish was a masterpiece of bold flavours and impeccable presentation, reflecting the restaurant’s commitment to authenticity and innovation.
On our final day, I indulged myself to a signature aromatherapy massage at the Carlton Spa, where the therapists use natural oils infused with crystals to enhance relaxation. The experience was deeply soothing, with gentle yet firm strokes melting away any tension. The bespoke blend of lavender, sandalwood, and bergamot enveloped me in a cocoon of tranquillity, leaving me refreshed and re-energised. It was the perfect way to end a stay defined by indulgence and serenity.
As we prepared to leave, we couldn’t help but reflect on the past three days—the impeccable service, the breathtaking views, the culinary excellence, and the timeless allure of the Carlton Cannes. It had been more than just a luxurious getaway; it was an experience steeped in history, elegance, and Riviera glamour. For anyone seeking the ultimate Côte d’Azur escape, the Carlton Cannes is not just a hotel—it’s a legendary destination that continues to redefine luxury. And as we bid it adieu, we knew one thing for certain: we would be back – and I’m sure Ryan would be too.
