With autumn fast approaching, it’s time to dust off those chunky knit jumpers, don the boots and head outdoors. The Cotswolds offers the perfect escape this season, more specifically the village of Winchcombe, near Cheltenham, and the best place to stay here is The Lion Inn.
The friendly staff here are hospitable and the guys behind the bar make a devilishly good Bloody Mary! There’s a charm about this welcoming pub, with its rustic decor and smiling customers. The rooms, located at the back of the pub, offer peace and quiet. Overlooking the back garden makes for a quaint view, too. The rooms are spacious, clean and again – very charming in their qualities.
The food is of a very high quality – British pub fare done really well. The slow cooked pork belly is mouth-wateringly good, while the sticky toffee pudding is worth every spoonful. The full English breakfast the next day is an absolute must. Even the mushrooms are good, and this is coming from someone who’s openly disliked mushrooms his entire life!
You’ll be in for such a blissful night’s sleep you won’t want to wake up in the morning, but just remember what I said about that breakfast. The best thing here though is its location, a stone’s throw away from the Great British countryside, which makes for the perfect way to walk off a hearty breakfast and the ideal setting to conclude your stay.
