Why are Londoner’s flocking to Uncommon Deli next to The Tate Modern?

Nestled by the iconic Tate Modern, Uncommon Deli is a delightful addition to London’s vibrant culinary scene, blending gourmet convenience with a welcoming atmosphere. On a recent lunch outing with my wife and our food-loving baby boy, Xavier, we found ourselves enchanted by the carefully curated menu and the inviting ambiance that Neb and Mina have fostered.

Upon entering Uncommon Deli, we were immediately struck by the airy, light-filled space adorned with modern decor—a perfect complement to the artistic spirit of the Tate next door. The deli is not just a café but also an exciting shop filled with artisanal treats, catering to tourists, locals, and art enthusiasts alike.

After a brief glance at the enticing menu board, we settled on a few dishes that showcased the culinary prowess of this husband-and-wife team. My choice was the beef lasagna, while my wife opted for the feta and spinach quiche, and we couldn’t resist trying the vegetarian lasagna featuring ricotta and pesto.

When our dishes arrived, the presentation was impressive. The beef lasagna was a hearty masterpiece, layers of rich meat sauce, perfectly cooked pasta, and a bubbling, golden top that promised indulgence. Each bite was a comforting reminder of traditional Italian cooking, with flavors that melded together beautifully. It was the kind of dish that made you want to savor every mouthful, especially with the hint of fresh herbs that elevated it further.

My wife’s feta and spinach quiche was equally delightful. The crust was buttery and flaky, cradling a luscious filling of fresh spinach and creamy feta that struck a perfect balance between lightness and satisfaction. It was a refreshing choice, especially on a sunny day, and the side salad added a nice crunch that complemented the quiche beautifully.

The vegetarian lasagna quickly became a favorite at our table. The ricotta and pesto brought a delightful twist to the classic dish, creating a fresh and vibrant flavour profile. It was a hearty nod to the deli’s commitment to using quality ingredients and innovative recipes, allowing even a meat-free option to shine.

As we indulged in our main courses, we decided to sweeten the experience further with some desserts. Uncommon Deli’s display of freshly baked cakes was irresistible. We shared a slice of decadent chocolate cake and a light lemon drizzle. Both were exquisite; the chocolate was rich and velvety, while the lemon cake offered a zesty counterpoint that was refreshing and uplifting.

To wash it all down, we each ordered frothy coffees and a silky rich chocolate drink for the road (aka whist meandering through quirky art installations at The Tate). The hot coffees was expertly crafted, striking a balance between robust and smooth, perfect for an afternoon pick-me-up.

Uncommon Deli, with its spacious terrace and vibrant atmosphere, proves to be more than just a place to grab a quick bite. It’s a hub for community and connection, ideal for families, art lovers, and anyone seeking quality food in a relaxed setting. The staff, including the friendly George, were attentive and made our visit even more enjoyable, showcasing the warmth that defines this establishment.

Whether you’re in the area for a leisurely lunch, a post-work unwind during happy hour, or simply to explore the culinary offerings near Tate Modern, Uncommon Deli is a place that invites you to return again and again. With a commitment to high-quality ingredients and a menu that caters to diverse palates, it’s no wonder that this deli is quickly becoming a favorite for many. For us, it was not just a meal, but a lovely outing that made us feel right at home…and tempted to shop for fabulous Italian olive oils.
