London’s best fusion Sunday roasts

I love a Sunday roast as much as the next Brit and I love Middle Eastern / Levantine food as much as the next Lebanese. Being of mixed heritage myself, when I learnt about a marriage of the two cuisines I was doubly excited. These Sunday roasts were created for me in mind.

Skewd Kitchen

Skewd Kitchen is an award-winning, fine dining Anatolian restaurant and bar in Cockfosters, and they’ve given the traditional Sunday roast a Turkish makeover with the launch of The Smokehouse.

Created by Executive Chef Maz Demir, the Sunday roast here at Skewd pays homage to more than just British and Turkish fare. The Wagyu beef is sourced directly from Japan and is smoked using American hickory. This single dish pays homage to all corners of the globe!

This delectable piece of meat is wonderfully cooked and is loaded with delicious flavour. Using specialist ingredients and modern, innovative cooking techniques, Maz and team have hit the carnivorous jackpot.

Served with Anatolian spiced roast potatoes, braised red cabbage and seasonal vegetables, the hearty dish is completed with a classic Yorkshire Pudding. Classic it may be, the alternative spin here is that it’s a Kaygana – a Turkish-style egg based pastry aerated in a siphon. Skewd Kitchen’s team then pumps the Kaygana with nitrogen gas, making it light and airy, to re-create the shape of that British favourite.

A vegetarian option is also available, which includes miso glazed aubergines with a mushroom gravy.

Mamounia Lounge

Meanwhile at the other end of the Piccadilly line, in Knightsbridge, Mamounia Lounge is giving the the traditional British Sunday roast a contemporary Arabic twist with the launch of its Lebanese and Moroccan-style Sunday Roast menu.

Created by Head Chef Thamer Darwish, it’s been designed to reinvent Britain’s most celebrated meal and pay homage to the ingredients and flavour combinations used in authentic Arabic cooking.

The Meshoui signature slow roasted shoulder of lamb is cooked to perfection. Tender and full of flavour, it comes with white rice, cherry tomatoes and caramelised fruit.

There’s also a beautifully marinated roast chicken served with saffron rice, confit cherry tomatoes and a mixed leaf salad.

Mamounia Lounge offers a stylish and contemporary venue that evokes a certain Arabic charm with its rich gold and bronze décor. With its location just moments away from Harrods, it is the ideal destination for a post shopping refreshment or leisurely daytime treat.
