Where to enjoy Veganuary this month

Michelin Guide 2019 inspectors have recognised Kennington Tandoori saying: “Kowsar Hoque runs this contemporary Indian restaurant with great pride and his eagerness and professionalism filters through to his staff. The food is prepared with equal care – try the seasonal specialities and the excellent breads.” The iconic neighbourhood restaurant (going strong since 1985, serving up traditional Indian food in South London) is now offering a special vegan and vegetarian menu for the month of January with the spirit of Veganuary and January detoxing in mind.

Expect mouth-watering dishes such as Sweetcorn & Mushroom Tak-a-Tin – stir fried in a wok with tangy onion and tomato; Amritsar Chickpea Masala gently cooked in Indian tea with onions and tomato; and Spinach & Fenugreek Pakoras – lightly spiced crisp parcels of fresh fenugreek and spinach with a tangy tamarind dressing.

On my recent visit, I couldn’t resist Apu’s Streetfood Platter to start: the pakoras mentioned above were included (they’re fantastic), along with a delicious Traditional Vegetable Samosa and Crispy Okra that’s expertly cooked.

Follow this theme with the mains and order small plates of numerous dishes – that way you get to try a variety of flavours. The South Indian Mixed Vegetable Stew is wholesome and slightly sweet (think Korma), as it’s made with coconut and curry leaf. Balance this out with a bit of spice, which you’ll get from the Calcutta Street-Food Chilli Paneer (an excellent dish – paneer is so underrated in my opinion).

The Tarka Dall is perfect for the bitter cold we’re facing at the moment, it’s so comforting and full of flavour. Three varieties of lentils tempered with garlic and cumin results in a perfect Veganuary winter dish. The Spinach and Potato is another classic cooked perfectly here. Prepared North Indian-style with fresh green herbs, it’s soul food to fuel the body.

In keeping with the vegan theme, Kennington Tandoori are also offering a selection of vegan fine wines ensuring the perfect tipple is on hand to compliment your meal. Attempting Dry January? Keep going! There is a great selection of refreshing soft drinks on offer too.

Whether you’re attempting Veganuary, Dry January or just fancy a really good Indian meal (carnivores, relax, you can still order meat dishes), Kennington Tandoori is the one this month.
