Simple ways to spruce up your garden for the summer

As the days get longer and the sun starts to shine more frequently, it’s the perfect time to give your garden a fresh lease of life. If you’re planning to make more of your outdoor space this year, whether that’s hosting a few barbecues or unwinding with a book in the sun, a few simple changes can make all the difference. Here are some of the best ways to spruce up your garden for the season ahead.

Revive your lawn

The lush green of a well-maintained lawn adds to the charm of any garden. However, winter often leaves lawns tired and patchy. To revive yours, start by raking away any dead grass, leaves, or moss.

Aerate compacted areas with a garden fork, then apply a quality, organic lawn fertiliser to promote healthy growth. For bare patches, sow grass seed or consider using turf to give them a quick boost. Mow regularly throughout the season but ensure the blades are set high for the first few cuts to avoid stressing the grass too much.

Clean up your patio

After months of weathering and neglect, your patio or deck might be looking a little worse for wear. Begin by removing any furniture and sweeping away debris. A pressure washer can work wonders for stubborn dirt or algae, but you may also need a dedicated cleaning solution.

Once your deck or patio is clean and dry, consider adding a protective treatment. A weatherproof sealant for decks or masonry sealer for patios can give an extra layer of protection and should make the job of maintaining them much easier.

Introduce some colour

Nothing breathes new life into a garden quite like a burst of colour. Vibrant plants like geraniums, marigolds, and petunias make for an immediate impact. Mix these with perennials that offer long-lasting blooms, like lavender or salvia, to keep your garden bright all summer.

Alternatively, grow your fruits and vegetables for splashes of organic colour. Tomato plants are easy to care for and return delicious additions to your dinner table. Grow them in hanging baskets or containers to fill gaps and add height and depth to your garden.

Keep pests away

Creating a garden haven is great for you, but it also attracts uninvited guests like aphids, slugs, and caterpillars. Deter them with preventative measures such as removing standing water, clearing away dead and decaying organics, and introducing companion plants like marigolds that naturally repel pests.

You can also encourage natural predators, such as ladybirds or hedgehogs, by providing shelter and healthy food sources. For persistent pests, consider using organic-only insecticides. These can either be homemade or shop-bought.
