Restaurant review: Zuaya

In the eclectic culinary universe of London, Zuaya resides as a dazzling celestial body, attracting gastronomes with its magnetic fusion of Latin American cuisine and innovative, modern gastronomy. Nestled in Kensington’s heart, Zuaya transports you to a tropical haven, with luxuriant greenery, warm wooden tones, and the soft, hypnotic rhythm of Latin music.

Stepping into Zuaya is akin to entering a magical jungle oasis. It’s a striking visual feast of hanging plants, vine-wrapped pillars, and a lush living wall, contrasted against modernistic metallic accents and a vibrant bar stocked with a spectrum of gleaming bottles. The ambient lighting and pulsating Latin beats lend an intoxicatingly festive yet intimate atmosphere, setting the stage for an unforgettable culinary journey.

Zuaya’s menu, a gastronomic lexicon of Latin America’s rich and diverse food cultures, elevates traditional recipes with a creative twist that surprises and delights. A parade of tapas and small plates welcomed my dining companions and I. The fried Venezualian bread sticks were pure joy to savour and the melt-in-the-mouth slow roasted lamb taco was a symphony of exotic flavours – a true delight for even the fussiest tastebuds.

The robata grill is the heart and soul of Zuaya. The Argentine-style sirloin was cooked to smoky, charred perfection, and drizzled with tangy chimichurri sauce. A true carnivore’s dream. Equally impressive was the milk fed lamb chops – succulent, tender meat seared to an enticing golden brown and devoured with happy side plates of soy sweetened vegetables and a refreshing tomato, avocado and pomegranate salad.

Zuaya surprises with their unique takes on classic desserts as well. Their take on the humble dulce de leche flan is presented as a work of art on a plate, the coconut-laden base adorned with sweet, caramelised happiness. This reimagined classic indulgence provides a sweet ending to a true gastronomic feast.

Beyond the enchanting ambiance and the culinary treasures, it’s the passion and the commitment to the craft that make Zuaya shine. Every detail is meticulous, every ingredient handpicked, each dish artfully presented. The wait staff, with their radiant smiles and intimate knowledge of the menu, add to the overall allure. Their wine list is as diverse and exciting as their menu, boasting an impressive selection of Latin American labels, carefully curated to complement the food’s vibrancy.

Your experience at Zuaya is not just about savouring excellent food. It’s an immersive journey into the heart of Latin America, complete with a symphony of flavours, a riot of colours, and the vibrancy of the atmosphere. The rhythm of life is palpable here. With each bite, you explore remote culinary landscapes, experiencing the boldness of their spices, the richness of their produce, and the love they pour into every dish.

One visit to Zuaya is never enough; it’s a place that beckons you back, time and time again.
