Nestled in the picturesque countryside of Winchester, Lainston House stands as a beacon of historical charm and contemporary luxury. Originally built as a 17th-century country house, its storied past is evident in every corner, offering guests a unique blend of heritage and modern comforts.
History and Grounds
Lainston House’s rich history dates back to 1622 when it was first constructed as a private residence. Over the centuries, it has evolved into a luxurious hotel while retaining much of its original character.
Set within 63 acres of meticulously landscaped grounds, the estate boasts serene gardens, ancient trees, and a tranquil avenue of lime trees, providing a serene backdrop for guests seeking relaxation and natural beauty.
The Heather Suite and Unique Bedrooms
Among its distinctive accommodations, the Heather Suite epitomises elegance and comfort. Named after the vibrant heather that adorns the nearby Hampshire hills, this suite offers spacious living areas, a luxurious bathroom, and panoramic green views of the estate.
Each room at Lainston House is tastefully decorated with a blend of classic furnishings and modern amenities, ensuring a serene and comfortable stay for every guest.
The Wellhouse and Wood-Fire Cuisine
At the heart of Lainston House’s culinary experience lies The Wellhouse, a unique dining venue renowned for its innovative wood-fired cuisine. The kitchen’s commitment to using locally sourced ingredients and traditional cooking methods over open flames adds a distinctive depth of flavour to every dish. From succulent meats to fresh seafood and seasonal vegetables, each plate tells a story of skilful preparation and dedication to quality.
We recommend starting off with the Smoked potato rosti with leek and old Winchester cheese from the snacks section of the menu, followed by the Soused mackerel, smoked mackerel rillette, gooseberry and labneh from the little plates, as well as the excellent BBQ Kitchen Garden asparagus with wild garlic pesto and crisped quail eggs. This should all nicely set your appetite up for the main event.
You can choose to share a Tuscan grilled rib-eye steak on the bone with black garlic butter, but if you’re not into sharing and want your own meal, we’d highly recommend either the Tuscan grilled lamb rump, smoked belly, burnt onion, asparagus and wild garlic, or the Woodfired cod, café de Paris, mussels, samphire and garden greens. The choices are exquisite and that flame-grilled smokiness has developed into every ingredient served, making for a very unique and memorable meal in an ambient, rustic setting.
If you have room for dessert (why wouldn’t you?), then try the Basque cheesecake served with blood orange and chocolate soil. It’s divine.
